A new Miss America was crowned on Sunday (September 11) during the pageant’s 96th Anniversary broadcast, which took place in Atlantic City. Miss Arkansas’ Savvy Janine Shields took home the crown.
“The Bachelor’s” Chris Harrison hosted the show for the eighth year in a row and was joined by celebrity judges including Ciara, Mark Cuban, Gabby Douglas, and former Miss America Sharlene Wells Hawkes.
Shields won the hearts and respect of the judges through her amazing charity work and time spent giving back. Shields is a student at the University of Arkansas.
She will share her time as a student with her new role as Miss America where she embarks on a national speaking tour about her platform, Eat Better, Live Better and acts as the official National Goodwill Ambassador for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.
The Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals is a nonprofit organization dedicated to saving and improving the lives of children. The organization raises funds for its 170 member hospitals and is the national platform partner of the Miss America Organization.
In addition to her crown and title, Shields won a $50,000 scholarship provided in part by Joseph Ribkoff Inc. and the Miss America Organization to continue her education at the University of Arkansas.
The first runner-up in the competition was Miss South Carolina Rachel Wyatt who earned a $25,000 scholarship. Wyatt is an advocate for the nonprofit Autism Speaks.
The second runner-up is Miss New York Camille Sims and received a $20,000 scholarship. She spends her time raising awareness for Encouraging Wellness and Fostering Food Justice.
