With early Millennials now in their 30s, the rush of nostalgia that a decade ago was dominated by the 1980s has now shifted to the 1990s.
Popular shows like Full House and Boy Meets World got modern makeovers, while Jimmy Fallon refuses to let his audiences forget Saved by the Bell.
But it’s more than family sitcoms that thirtysomethings yearn for, which is why actor/director Ben Giroux teamed with indie hip-hop Jensen Reed for the parody music video, Back to the 90s.
The original song, as Giroux puts it, “is an homage to the decade we grew up in.” Viewers in the similar age group as Giroux and Reed will get a kick out of the numerous pop culture and social references, not to mention the spot-on recreations and style of the decade.
“I think one of my favorite things from set was just all of the nostalgia that we had,” Giroux told Good Celebrity.
“Our production designer was incredible and just found legitimate Nintendos, and Furbies, and everywhere you looked on set there was something very authentic from the 90s.”
Clearly striking a chord with their intended audience, Back to the 90s went viral shortly after hitting YouTube on May 1.
“We are so excited that the entire world has tweeted and shared our videos so many times,” said Giroux. “In three days we’re up to like 26 million views on our videos.”
Of course, packing an entire decade into five minutes meant something was going to be left out, and Giroux said his fans let him hear about it.
“I’ve been getting a lot of flack online that we did not include pogs, so that is a massive oversight,” he joked.
Back to the 90s marks the third collaboration between Giroux and Reed and also features Jared Lee and Garrett Clayton assisting in a Backstreet Boys-inspired sequence.
“This project has been so unbelievably exciting to work on,” said Giroux, adding “Jensen’s an unbelievably talented musician and we shot this over the course of two years actually. This project took two years to create.”
Giroux created the production company Small Red Cape and stars on the Nickelodeon animated series Bunsen is a Beast and has a recurring role on Henry Danger. His credits also include guest spots on numerous the television shows NCIS, Bones, and 2 Broke Girls.
