WWE wrestler John Cena went off script at Wrestlemania 33 on Sunday, April 2 when he dropped to one knee and proposed to his tag team partner in the middle of the ring.
The proposal would have been a total shocker had his partner not also been his longtime girlfriend and fellow wrestler, Nikki Bella (whose real name is Stephanie Nicole Garcia-Colace). Moments after the couple defeated the mixed tag team of The Miz and Maryse, Cena popped the question.
The day after WWE’s flagship event, Cena and Bella appeared on Today and talked about the big moment as well as their future together.
“I never actually would have thought that he would propose in front of all those people but that’s home for us, WWE is our home, it’s where we met, it’s our passion, it’s our life,” Bella said.
“So for me it was kind of like… he’s my prince charming and he’s just saying ‘I want her to by my queen at our home, in front of our family’ and honestly, I couldn’t ask for it to be any other way. It was perfect.” she added.
Cena’s reluctance to commit to Bella was a main storyline on the E! reality show Total Divas, which follows the hectic lives of female wrestlers. Their in-ring personas, however, rarely interact on WWE’s weekly and monthly wrestling programs and their match at Wrestlemania was the first time in which they teamed together in the ring.
Throughout his lengthy career Cena headlined five Wrestlemanias, won 25 different championships and performed in front of millions of fans around the globe, but this moment may very well top them all.
I want to thank my always expressive “family” the @WWEUniverse for allowing me to have a #WrestleMania moment that I will NEVER forget!
