For the past few months, Sarah Michelle Geller has offered her time and considerable talents to an incredibly important cause that affects million. It’s a homegrown tragedy going on every day in our own cities: suburban hunger among children. SMG has joined No Kid Hungry as it’s latest spokesperson.
The No Kid Hungry campaign connects kids in need with nutritious food and teaches their families how to cook healthy, affordable meals. The campaign also engages the public to make ending child hunger a national priority.
Geller cites the influence of her mother when it comes to charity work, whom she says “always taught me that you could make a difference to other people.” While that impulse to help others once brought her overseas to places like Guatemala and Africa, since having children, Geller has found herself drawn into local issues. After reading about hunger in America, she discovered just how dire the situation is: four out five children in America go hungry at some point in their lives. Troubled and moved, she contacted No Kid Hungry and offered her help: “I just called them up and I said I’m here and I’m able to help. I think they thought it was a joke at first.” Now, partnering with No Kid Hungry, she’s helping them in their mission to improve breakfast programs in school and summer meal programs for children in need. But there’s still plenty of work to do. According to Geller, even though “90% of the schools have the [breakfast] program in place already […] many kids are still hungry each and every day.”
Thank you @peoplemag for highlighting all the great work and special kids that I get to work with… https://t.co/hJTM16BV18 — Sarah Michelle (@SarahMGellar) August 5, 2015
When asked how the rest of us might chip in, she offers some simple advice: “realize that the family next door [might be] hungry” and “share the studies and information [about child hunger in America] on Facebook or Twitter or with your mom friends at school.”
Perhaps if we follow her lead and do what we can to help solve this terrible problem, fewer children will go hungry each day. That’s a cause we can all agree is worth fighting for.
