Demi Lovato has incurred her fair share of ups and downs since gaining prominence as a Disney Channel star, but the singer continues to embrace her responsibility as a role model to her fans.
Case in point, a recent Instagram post in which she celebrated five years of sobriety. Lovato shared the stats of her clean life (which amounts to 60 months, 1,827 days, and 43,813 hours) as well as an inspiring and faith-based message.
“So grateful. It’s been quite the journey,” she wrote in the caption of the photo, which she posted on March 15.
“So many ups and downs. So many times I wanted to relapse but sat on my hands and begged God to relieve the obsession. I’m so proud of myself but I couldn’t have done it without my higher power (God), my family, friends, and everyone else who supported me. Feeling humbled and joyful today. Thank you guys for sticking by my side and believing in me,” she continued.
Lovato hit a low point as an 18-year-old in 2010 when her dependency on cocaine forced her to check into rehab. She was at the peak of her Disney Channel fame at the time and touring with the Jonas Brothers. Lovato’s addiction led to her abrupt departure from the tour and her decision to seek help.
She revealed her struggle with addiction, which also included filling soda bottles with vodka, to Access Hollywood in 2013.
“I couldn’t go without 30 minutes to an hour without cocaine and I would bring it on airplanes,” she said, adding “I would smuggle it basically and just wait until everyone in first class would go to sleep and I would do it right there. I’d sneak to the bathroom and I’d do it,” she said.
Lovato is no stranger to opening up about difficult issues. In the past, she shared her battle with bulimia and frequently promotes positive body images for women.
She also recently signed on to headline a charity concert to benefit the organization, Musicians on Call, which brings live and recorded music to hospital patients.
