Actors gathered together at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles for the 23rd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards last night and the event was filled with memorable wins and politically-driven speeches.
With the immigration ban top of mind, many celebs decided to use their time in the spotlight to share their feelings on the topic.

Best Actor winner Mahershala Ali used his time at the mic to speak about his views on the ban.
“What I think I learned from working on Moonlight is you see what happens when you persecute people,” Ali said.
“They fold into themselves. What I was so thankful about in having the opportunity to play Juan was playing a gentleman who saw a young man folding into himself as a result of the persecution of his community, taking that opportunity to uplift him, and tell him that he mattered and that he was okay and accept him. And I hope that we do a better job of that.”

In addition, noted Libertarian and star of Stranger Things, David Harbour, gave his views about social topics while accepting the award for Best Drama Ensemble and said that the show helps to, “Repel bullies, we will shelter freaks and outcasts, those who have no home. We will get past the lies, we will hunt monsters. And when we are at a loss amidst the hypocrisy and the casual violence of certain individuals and institutions, we will, as per Chief Jim Hopper, punch some people in the face when they seek to destroy the weak, the disenfranchised, and the marginalized!”
As for the night’s other winners, the cast of Hidden Figures took home the top film honor, while Orange Is the New Black won best ensemble in a comedy series.
