Sunday, February 26, 2017, the “City of Stars” will once again shine brightly as the 89th Academy Awards take place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. Nominations for the most coveted prizes in film were released on Tuesday, January 24, and to no one’s surprise, La La Land led the way with the most nods.
A throwback to classic musicals like Singin’ in the Rain and An American in Paris, the film scored a record, tying 14 nominations including slots in the five major categories: Best Picture, Best Director (Damien Chazelle), Best Original Screenplay (Chazelle), Best Actor (Ryan Gosling), and Best Actress (Emma Stone).
Two songs from the picture (“City of Stars” and “Audition (The Fools Who Dream)”) were also recognized in the Best Original Song category.
The Oscars were accused in recent years for it’s lack of diversity (remember #OscarSoWhite?) but this year a wide array of talented filmmakers, actors, and actresses received nominations.
Notable nods include: Fences, Lion, Hidden Figures, and Moonlight for Best Picture, Denzel Washington (Fences), Ruth Negga (Loving) , Mahershala Ali (Moonlight), Dev Patel (Lion), Viola Davis (Fences), Octavia Spencer (Hidden Figures), and Naomie Harris (Moonlight) in acting categories and Moonlight’s Barry Jenkins for director.
Golden Globe Best Picture winners La La Land and Moonlight are expected to be the top contenders for Best Picture along with Manchester by the Sea. The three movies are among nine pictures competing for the best film of the year.
As always, there are plenty of snubs and surprises. Among those missing out this year are Amy Adams (Arrival) for Best Actress, Martin Scorsese (Silence) and Clint Eastwood (Sully) for Best Director and Tom Hanks (Sully) for Best Actor.
Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, the 89th Academy Awards air live February 26 at 8pm ET / 5pm PT on ABC.
