Sparkles, broken teleprompters, and heartfelt speeches – oh my! The 2017 Golden Globes took place last night (January 8) and the broadcast was filled with memorable moments.
Jimmy Fallon kicked off the award show with a star-studded opening performance based on the award-winning film La La Land.
The Tonight Show host enlisted everyone from Nicole Kidman and Amy Adams to the talented cast (yes, even Barb) of Stranger Things in the highly entertaining musical performance. Fallon also made a little fun of himself during a bromantic dance sequence with his pal Justin Timberlake.
When Fallon hit the Globes stage, he started off his speech cold – literally – because the teleprompter broke right before going live. He handled it like a pro and the show went off without a hitch.
Other memorable moments included Kristen Wiig and Steve Carrell’s hilarious skit before announcing the winner (Zootopia) of Best Animated Movie.
In addition, Ryan Gosling made a heartfelt speech while accepting his Globe for Best Actor in a Movie – Comedy or Musical. The star thanked his partner, Eva Mendes, for being so supportive of him during the filming of La La Land before dedicating his award to her late brother who passed away from cancer.
Finally, Meryl Streep made waves after her speech to accept the Cecil B. Demille Award. The renowned actress talked about respect and empathy and how important it is in today’s volatile world.
As for the winners, La La Land was the darling of the night, taking home seven wins including Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, and Best Movie. Other notable wins included Tracee Ellis Ross for Best Actress in a Television Comedy for her role in Black-ish and Donald Glover’s win for his performance in Atlanta.
Moonlight took home the Best Movie – Drama win, while Casey Affleck made his mark on Hollywood with a win for Best Actor in a Drama for his role in Manchester By the Sea.
Overall, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association recognized a diverse group of performances, movies, and television shows, so many went home celebrating!
