Seems that Brad Pitt is following in Ryan Gosling’s footsteps and has also sent Costco a letter asking why they haven’t stayed true to their promise of selling only cage-free eggs. Pitt’s letter expresses his concern with the living conditions of the chickens whose eggs they sell, but also compliments the good aspects of their company.

Excerpts from Pitt’s letter reads: “As you know, these birds producing eggs for your shelves are crammed five or more into cages that are not large enough for even one hen to spread her wings. In these cruel cages, the animals’ muscles and bones atrophy from years of immobilization. That’s why the cages are illegal in most of Europe, and why California banned the cages by an overwhelming vote years ago. In short, cramming hens into cages for their entire lives constitutes cruelty to animals, and animals deserve better. As you know, many major corporations, from Burger King to Unilever, are getting rid of cages—and Whole Foods hasn’t sold eggs from caged hens in years. I admire Costco’s many positive social commitments. You’ve shown great courage and integrity on a range of issues. Won’t you please extend that sensibility—and basic decency—to chickens? Please, will you set a reasonable timeframe to stop selling eggs from caged hens?”

Costco first announced plans to move towards cage-free eggs back in 2007, but the company has yet to set a timeline for that goal. The long wait has sent not only customers, but as made evident, some celebrities in uproar. According to Yahoo, Costco has yet to respond to either Brad Pitt or Ryan Gosling, but the general hope is that things will change soon, for the better.

Seems that Ryan Gosling has more pride in his name than we originally thought. (Gosling = baby bird) The actor has recently contacted Costco and is attempting to hold them to its long time commitment of selling only free-range eggs. Essentially, he no longer wants the company selling eggs from farms in which chickens are forced to gain weight/produce eggs while housed in very small cages where conditions can be rough.

CEO of Costco, Craig Jelinek, received a letter from Gosling explaining that a video filmed by the Humane Society during an undercover investigation shows the less than favorable situation. Footage shows a multitude of rows containing chickens packed into cages they clearly don’t all fit in. The tiny space holds many dead chickens which haven’t been removed, and this is the area in which the birds eat, sleep and lay the eggs sold at Costco. The senior policy director for the Humane Society, Matt Prescott, explained that Costco made a promise to switch over to only selling free-range eggs about eight years ago, but has yet to make this promise come true. The hope is that, maybe, with a bit of celebrity push, this eight-year-old promise will become a reality and free-range eggs will be the only available eggs at Costco.
