Pearl Jam played two concerts at Safeco Field this week as a means of getting the community together to address extreme poverty.

In addition to encouraging 100 Seattle businesses to join in on the fundraising efforts, the shows raised over $11 million, 90% of which will be donated.

The businesses participating in the initiative all volunteered to donate varying portions of their proceeds to the charitable initiative as well.

The money is set to be distributed to 40 different homeless organizations based out of Seattle.

He continued by explaining that as soon as Martin was appointed curator, he began work on setting up acts. “He not only said that Coldplay would be happy to be part of it, he was so humble in his approach that he began talking to his fellow artists as well. He reached out to Ed Sheeran first, who said yes immediately and around the same time he asked Beyoncé to get involved, who was obviously onstage with Jay Z last year when he headlined and had a great experience.”

The star power that has been packed into this annual festival have cultivated new partnerships including Chime For Change and Global Poverty Project. Beyoncé and Selma Hayek co-founded Chime For Change, a gender equality campaign allowing better access to education for women as well as helping to eliminate poverty. The overall event, so far, includes Pearl Jam, Carrie Underwood, Tiësto, No Doubt, Sting, Alicia Keys, Jay Z, Beyoncé, The Roots and fun., as performers, as well as corporate partners such as H&M which is partnering with the event and will aid with a clothes-recycling program.

A one hour special will be recorded from New York’s Great Lawn in Central Park on September 26, to then be aired on television on September 27 on NBC, and September 28 on BBC for the UK. Some sites, YouTube and iHeartRadio, will live stream the event for those who want a real-time play-by-play.

A chance at winning free tickets to the festival is available on the Global Citizen Festival website and can be entered by volunteering, making phone calls, or becoming a part of the effort to spread the word about worldwide poverty. Those who want to purchase tickets can do so via Ticketmaster, with Citi cardmembers (a presenting sponsor of the festival) having special access to tickets.
