]]> From tragedy to triumph. A week after Capitol police officer Crystal Griner took a bullet during an attack at a congressional baseball team practice, she threw out the first pitch at a charity softball game.

Griner, who is temporarily in a wheelchair while she recovers from reconstructive surgery on her leg, received a rousing ovation as she hurled the ceremonial toss at the Congressional Women’s Softball game, which pits female lawmakers against journalists. The contest raises money for the fight against breast cancer.

Griner is one of two heroic Capitol officers (the other being David Bailey) who was wounded during a shooting of Republican congressman at a baseball field in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday, June 14. Four others were also Injured in the attack including House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, whose condition was recently updated from “serious” to “fair.” The gunman, who the FBI determined acted alone, was killed during the incident.




The congressmen were practicing for the annual Congressional Baseball Game. Bailey threw out the first pitch of the emotional contest, which took place a day after the shooting and saw Democrats defeat their Republican counterparts 11-2.

President Donald Trump praised Griner and Bailey for their “heroic deeds” and Senator Rand Paul, who was present during the shooting, credited the duo for saving the lives of everyone at the practice.

“Our lives were saved by the Capitol Police. Had they not been there I think it would have been a massacre,” Paul told CNN after the shooting.
