Our hometown heroes mitigated a scary situation early this week as a man opened fire inside his room at the Hyland Motel.

On Monday (August 15), Brea Police and Firefighters responded to reports of a suicidal 55-year-old man inside the motel. He was reportedly lying on the floor, unresponsive, until the first responders showed up.

At that time, the man yelled at the officers, telling them to leave, before firing one shot through the wall of the motel room, per a police report.

After the shot, which narrowly missed one of the officers, the first responders including two police and three firefighters took cover behind a parked vehicle. An armored vehicle from the North Orange County SWAT Team showed up for cover after the first shot from the suspect was fired.

Per the Brea Police Department’s Facebook page, “After a four-hour standoff, the SWAT team used ‘less lethal’ bean bag munitions to shoot the suspect as he was in the open doorway of the room.”

Once hit by the bean bag ammunition, the SWAT team was able to arrest the man and transport him to a local hospital. The suspect suffered only minor injuries.

He is now in Orange County Jail and charged with attempted murder of a police officer.

We want to say thanks to the first responders for you dedication to keeping our town safe!
