Two new earthquakes hit Mexico on Saturday, rattling a country already immersed in devastation from the 2 other large tremors that hit earlier this month.
According to CNN, the 6.1 magnitude earthquake that was centered in Oaxaca state Saturday morning near Matias Romero, a town about 275 miles southeast of Mexico City. The epicenter was the smaller of the 3 quakes including the 7.1 magnitude quake that hit Tuesday closer to the capital, and the 8.1 magnitude quake that struck September 8 off the southern Pacific coast, near Chiapas state.
Images and videos of the destruction are all over the news and social media of buildings and property wrecked while thousands of people crowded the streets after abandoning their homes.
In a recent video Salma Hayek posted on Instagram, she shared her first-hand experience as a survivor of a huge earthquake in the same city in 1985.
“A lot of friends died, including an uncle that was very, very close to me. I have lived through the aftermath of a disaster of this magnitude and it’s horrific,” said Hayek.
In the same video, she called for everyone to help.
“I am starting a Crowdrise to try to raise money to help the families who are going through this nightmare right now in Mexico. I implore to the goodness of your hearts, to your compassion to help.”
Like Hayek, other celebrities expressed their sympathy through social media.
JK Rowling took to Twitter to encourage everyone to help through Oxfam while Eva Longoria – whose husband is in the city when the earthquake hit – also extended her prayers through the short-messaging app.
Heartbreaking footage from Mexico. I was there just last month. You can donate to Oxfam’s appeal, as I have, here: https://t.co/NSHXjnKB54 💔
