Proving that a superhero’s work is never done, The Incredible Hulk star Lou Ferrigno sprang into action over the weekend to help a fan suffering from a seizure at a comic book convention in Knoxville, Tennessee.
The 65-year-old former bodybuilder, who famously played the green-hued Marvel hero on the 1970’s TV series, was chatting with fan Ted McAlister at the Fanboy Expo Comic Con when he noticed him shaking and having trouble speaking. Ted’s father, Frank, recounted the incident in a Facebook post.
“Mr. Ferrigno touched me on the shoulder and said that Ted was trying to tell him something that he couldn’t understand,” McAlister wrote. “I turned and knew immediately that Ted was having a seizure and I told Mr. Ferrigno what the problem was and I needed to get to him. He cleared his booth and I gently sat Ted on the floor.”
As alarming as the situation was, there couldn’t have been a better spot or time for the seizure to hit. Ferrigno is a reserve deputy with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and volunteers with the Montrose Search and Rescue Team.
“I’ve been a sheriff for 12 years,” Ferrigno told the Knoxville News Sentinel. “So I deal with this situation.”
Ferrigno’s booth is often a favorite of fans at Comic Cons as the actor signs autographs and engages in conversation.
“It’s funny it happened at my table, and it’s like, I’m glad it happened here because he was at the right place, knowing that he would be OK,” Ferrigno said. “If it was a strange environment, in the street, he could have died.”
McAlister stated that Ferrigno alerted the medics and stayed with him and Ted until everything was fine, at which point he invited them back to his table for another photo.
“Talk about a real life Action Hero! This man is the real deal. It was an absolute honor to shake his hand and a greater honor to say Thank You to a gentle Giant,” he wrote, adding “I pray that God will bless this man and keep him safe and out of harms way. Thanks for a wonderful memory.”
