When one thinks of an ideal celebrity to read a bedtime story, the man who broke Batman’s back and buried Leonardo DiCaprio alive doesn’t necessarily come to mind.
But that’s exactly who the BBC chose for its program CBeebies Bedtime Stories. As the clock ticked towards 2017, The Dark Knight Rises and The Revenant star Tom Hardy read aloud from the children’s book You Must Bring a Hat.
Not only did the actor participate in the episode, which aired on New Year’s Eve, but he was completely game for the reading as he did voices for the characters, lounged on a couch with his dog Woody curled up on his lap, and, yes, even wore a hat.
Hardy’s film work isn’t geared towards children yet he surely gained many fans as his soothing voice helped them peacefully doze off and enter a new year.
The actor’s performance generated thousands of comments on the show’s Facebook page as followers immediately started suggesting their choices for next celebrity reader.
Although, based on the responses, you have to wonder if the suggestions were more to please adults than their kids.
“Could Jennifer Lawrence perhaps do one of these? She’s very popular with children. Children love her. I only ask as I’m thinking of how much the kids would love it,” commented follower Justin Ross, while another fan professed a desire to hear Superman tell a tale.
“Could we have Henry Cavill next please. Obviously, for my son who would really really love to see him…” wrote Donna Marie Devlin.
“What’s the chances of getting Michael Fassbender to do one? #lifemade,” commented Kerry McFarlane.
Of course, the response was all in good fun and a sign that Hardy’s gentler side was a hit.
