They’re making waves over the pond due to their continuous charity work, and now J.K. Rowling and Elton John are officially topping the Sunday Times list of most charitable UK celebrities of 2016.
The legendary singer gave more than $36 million to charity last year. His primary charity of choice is his self-titled AIDS foundation in the UK and the US, which he established in the early nineties.

Meanwhile, the “Harry Potter” author donated more than $14 million to the Lumos Foundation. Rowling is the founder of the organization, which “works to support the 8 million children in institutions worldwide to regain their right to a family life and to end the institutionalisation of children,” per its website.
Rowling also supports the Volant Charitable Trust, which supports research for multiple sclerosis. The author’s mother died from MS.
Other Good Celebrities on the list of top charitable UK stars include professional golfer Rory McIlroy, the members of One Direction along with Brian May and Roger Taylor from the band Queen.
International soccer star David Beckham also made his mark on charities by donating $7 million of his earnings last year. In addition, Ringo Starr and Coldplay rounded out the top of the list thanks to their generous contributions to causes close to their hearts.
All the donations from the Times’ list total more than $3.7 billion over the past year. The top contributor in the UK is the Sainsbury family, who leads the pack for the third year in a row.
The family owns the second largest supermarket chain in the UK and donated more than 40% of their total wealth to charitable causes over the past year.
