Variety recently held its annual Power of Women luncheon in New York City and this year, there are more impressive females joining the ranks of tremendous honorees. The 2016 Variety Power of Women inductees include Julianne Moore, Lupita Nyong’o, Misty Copeland, Vera Wang and Megyn Kelly.
Each of the philanthropic women earned their own spot on the cover of Variety magazine’s special issue.
The mag’s Power of Women issue celebrates the achievements of influential females who support charitable organizations that bring awareness to imperative causes.
Julianne Moore brings awareness to children’s poverty, literacy and gun safety. The Oscar-winning actress is honored this year for her work with Everytown for Gun Safety.
“It was alarming to think something like this could happen, and the climate didn’t change immediately,” said Moore to the mag about the 2012 shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
Fellow Oscar-winning Lupita Nyong’o supports women and children in Uganda and other underserved regions around the globe. She teamed up with Mother Health International to create locally engaged birthing centers to ensure women have healthy deliveries.
Meanwhile, Misty Copeland is giving back to the organization that helped her rise to fame in the ballet industry. Copeland supports Project Plie, which promotes diversity in dance. It’s a partnership between the American Ballet Theatre and the Boys & Girls Club of America.
“I took my first ballet class on a basketball court at the Boys & Girls Club,” she told Variety.
In addition to her roots with the Boys & Girls Club, this organization has a special place in her heart because she is the first black woman promoted to principal dancer with ABT.
Famed wedding dress designer Vera Wang is honored for her close work with the New York- Presbyterian Youth Anxiety Center. She and Vogue’s Anna Wintour worked together to create the center, which assists young people with anxiety and depression management.
Finally, Fox Network’s Megyn Kelly is fighting back against child abuse in America. She’s an advocate for the cause in collaboration with Childhelp and currently donates her time by helping with the organization’s fundraisers.
“Every 10 seconds in the country, someone calls up to report a child-abuse crime in progress,” said Kelly.
