On Monday (March 21), the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) announced that it’s honoring Drew Barrymore during its annual ASPCA Bergh Ball next month. Lifestyle enthusiast Martha Stewart will present Barrymore with the award along with Matt Bershadker, president and CEO of the organization.
The “Charlie’s Angels” beauty is set to receive the ASPCA Compassion Award, which recognizes an individual in the entertainment industry who publicly supports animal welfare in the United States.
“Leveraging their creative talents and prominence, these artists have brought attention and action to the plight of vulnerable homeless animals, helping immeasurably to protect and save their lives,” ASPCA states in a press release.
In addition to Barrymore’s honor, the organization is celebrating its 150th Anniversary.
“This year’s ASPCA Bergh Ball takes on special significance, occurring in the very month of our founding 150 years ago,” said Bershadker. “This gathering of animal welfare champions exemplifies the high level of compassion and commitment that inspired Henry Bergh to create the ASPCA in 1866 – a dedication that continues to drive our lifesaving work around the country.”
The star-studded fundraising ball takes place at the famed Plaza Hotel in New York City and is hosted by “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story” star, Nathan Lane.
Plus, Uptown Funk musician Mark Ronson will provide the music for all the famous attendees as the evening’s DJ.
Each year, the Bergh Ball is the largest fundraising effort for ASPCA. The money raised during the night’s gala and auction benefits homeless, abused and neglected animals across the country.
ASPCA was founded in the mid-1800s as the first animal welfare organization in North America and “serves as the nation’s leading voice for animals.” According to a press release, it has more than two million supporters across the country.
Those looking to support the animal rights group can get involved with the Bergh Ball’s live auction via the web. Charitybuzz is auctioning off items for the cause that include a personalized voicemail from Lena Dunham, a training session from Bob Harper of NBC’s “The Biggest Loser,” a shopping spree and lunch date with designer Nicole Miller, two tickets to Marina Abramovic’s 70th birthday dinner at the Guggenheim, and four tickets to Billy Joel’s sold-out concert at Madison Square Garden.
Pretty awesome prizes!
