Tucked away in the small town of Cheyenne, Wyoming is a sweet little boy named Maverick Schutte. Although he lives out west, the 6-year-old is a huge Boston Red Sox fan, and in particular, roots heavily for his favorite player David Ortiz.
Earlier this month, Maverick had one of the best days of his life.
This young baseball fan is not an ordinary kid. He was born with a hole in his heart. He’s living with Tetralogy of Fallot, which according to the Mayo Clinic, is a rare condition caused by a combination of four heart defects that are present at birth.
Maverick has undergone 30 surgeries and has another scheduled soon, but he keeps fighting and living a happy, productive life.

Thanks for a connection with former Red Sox star Kevin Millar, Maverick has been in touch digitally with Big Papi.
During their chat, the MLB star promised to hit a homerun for the 6-year-old. Sure enough, he made good on his promise and scored the winning run against rival, the New York Yankees. But that was just the beginning of this meaningful relationship. Recently, Maverick and his family had the opportunity to fly to Boston to meet the athlete.

The 6-year-old hung out inside Fenway Park and spent time with Ortiz. It was also Maverick’s first time at the Red Sox home field.
In addition to hanging out with Ortiz, Maverick threw out the first pitch, caught a foul ball, and spent time in the home team’s dugout to visit with the other players.
